Carbon Cycle Complex: A Journey Beyond Fossil

In a recent presentation at the Axens Seminar in EQ Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, we had the privilege to unveil the transformative potential of our renewable complex project. At the heart of our renewable arm, LOKEN, lies a commitment to reimagining the traditional energy landscape. Instead of focusing solely on finite fossil fuels, we are tapping into the renewable potential of biofuels including Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Bio-ethanol to drive our energy needs.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to advancing sustainability and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. This journey beyond fossil fuels, will pave the way towards a brighter, greener, and more sustainable future.

LOKEN Spearheads Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Technology in Malaysia by FocusM

16th July 2023

In June last year, Malaysia Airlines via a partnership with Europe-based company Neste, operated a historic first passenger flight of its Boeing 737-800 using a blend of conventional jet fuel and SAF for a flight from Kuala Lumpur (KL) to Singapore.

While this technology is growing rapidly in Europe and the Western hemisphere, Malaysia is still in its infancy stages.

Hence, a group of engineers and entrepreneurs founded KL-based LOKEN with grand ambitions to become the first SAF manufacturer in the country. The company is hard at work towards refining this technology and building the infrastructure necessary to facilitate the transition from fossil-based fuel to renewable SAF…

TOYO-M awarded SAF Contract by LOKEN

23rd June 2023

Toyo Engineering & Construction Sdn. Bhd. (Toyo-M), a subsidiary of Toyo Engineering Corporation was awarded a pre-FEED contract by Loken SAF Sdn. Bhd. (LOKEN) on exploring the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Malaysia.

LOKEN, a subsidiary of Barium Selat was established with the vision of becoming the first high performance biofuels manufacturer in Malaysia that utilizes locally sourced feedstock. Driven by ambitious aspirations, LOKEN aims to pioneer in building the first renewable complex in Asia Pacific, Carbon Cycle Complex commencing with a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Refinery that aims to produce its first drop of fuel by 2025.

The pre-FEED study will leverage the capabilities of the two partners to validate the project commercials and ensure it is aligned with the intended plant capacity. This milestone highlights the partners’ commitment to implementing effective strategies for the construction of the first SAF plant in Malaysia.

SAF is currently the most sustainable proposition to help decarbonize aviation industry and has the potential to supply international markets. This project shall be a significant achievement for Toyo-M in the energy transition field. Toyo-M shall continue to promote efforts and contribute to carbon neutrality and reduction of global environmental load.

LOKEN Signs MOU with NS Corporation to Jointly Develop the First Renewable Complex in Asia Pacific

18th May 2023

SEREMBAN, MALAYSIA – LOKEN SAF Sdn Bhd (LOKEN) and NS Corporation have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a renewable complex in Negeri Sembilan, located in the Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0. The complex aims to be the first of its kind in Asia Pacific to utilize French technologies in reducing carbon emissions. The exchange of the MOU document was held on the 18th of May 2023 at NS Corporation’s office in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The signing ceremony was attended by distinguished guests and officials, including representatives from both companies, as well as government officials. This significant milestone marks the beginning of a promising joint venture between LOKEN and NS Corporation over the next 15 years.

“We are excited about this partnership with NS Corporation to develop the first renewable complex in Malaysia and Asia Pacific that will utilize carbon-reducing technologies,” said Rozali Sidek, Chief Investment Officer of LOKEN. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has set a target to reduce net aviation carbon emissions to 50% of 2005 levels by 2050. In addition, the industry has committed to improving fuel efficiency by an average of 1.5% per year from 2009 to 2020 and to cap net aviation CO2 emissions from 2020 onwards through the implementation of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). “The development of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel plant in Malaysia is a critical step towards achieving our goal of reducing carbon emissions in the aviation industry. We believe this project will not only have a positive impact on the environment but also contribute to the growth of the renewable energy industry in Malaysia.”

The complex will cover a 30-acre plot of land and include multiple bio-refineries and one of the largest R&D centers in the Asia Pacific, focusing on developing refinery catalysts, green and advanced technologies, and training new local talent. The renewable complex will be developed in stages, starting with a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) refinery. SAF is a cleaner-burning fuel made from renewable resources that can reduce carbon emissions by 80% when compared to existing fossil aviation fuels. LOKEN intends to assess the commercial of utilizing the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) technology to produce SAF, using waste oils such as used cooking oil and biomass oils as feedstock, with an expansion plan of utilizing ethanol through the use of Alcohol to Jet (ATJ) technology at a later stage.
The development of the renewable complex will be managed by Hemesh Nanda Kumar and Shazriana Suaib, graduates of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) who are leading the sustainable projects under LOKEN. This collaboration will enable LOKEN to work with local and private universities to develop and operate the R&D center, create new job opportunities and business ventures, and promote sustainable development in Malaysia.
LOKEN and NS Corporation are committed to working together to ensure the successful development of this project and achieving their shared goals of promoting sustainable development in Malaysia.
